I dreamed of a black lady composer from Brixton, Alice ***** who specialized in utopian visions of London. This is my attempt to recreate one of her pieces.

In the magic bluebell dells
of the Muswell Hills
all is right and well.
Now the wedding bells of Bow
ring out joy upon the world...

Like a dream through Bethnal Green
gentle breezes blow;
green the rushes grow
in the lush St Pancras fields
where the bright Fleet river flows...

like a children's song
Mother Thames flow on and on,
full of salmon on their run,
each a little sun,
each a pilgrim soul...

and the lion and the lamb
will at last live hand in hand
high on Primrose Hill...

and the doves of Pimlico
nest in swaying poplar trees,
lovers down below
basking in the glow
of the honey-coloured sun...

Open-hearted Wimbledon
where the Wombles roam
and wild roses grow,
and the badger and the mole
who so love the London loam
they call a hole a home...

There's a green place on a hill
with a line where time began...

and the bramble and the broom
bloom again on Bromley wold;
clothed in cloth of gold
Croydon's crocus vale...

and in sacred Ladbrooke groves
druids venerate the oak,
the rowan and the yew
under bright blue skies...

Now the Effra and the Fleet
and the Wandle and the Lea
wander to the sea:
so we will be free...
