STORMBIRDS
Look down from this hill at the rows of houses,
and feel the undertow, the coming deluge...
All we see will be swept to sand and the tower will tumble,
all creatures lost or drowned; all but the Stormbird...
So wipe that teardrop from your eye: I name no sorrow,
but the great, the native night we have long hoped for!
So push the prow out through the foam,
part the waters,
and take flight the very night of the world's end...
We've not a stone to call our own, not a rock to ground us,
just the castles of the foam,
and row-on-shifting-row of endless tiny mountains...
It is a great and noble fate
to be called a Stormbird,
to take flight the very night of the world's end.
As the farmer plows his field,
and the seeds are scattered,
we alone the darkness roam the night before creation...
Until we are by transport worn,
and we seek asylum
in the cradle of the storm
we make our tiny island...
Then hoist your boat up on the shore,
build a home, a harbour,
and look down through the bars
at the shifting shingle...
But let the storm blow through the home!
Let the water come down!
Sleep we safe above the foam,
safe within our island home,
safe within our house of stone
in a row of houses.
